Patrick McGoohan “The Prisoner Puzzle” Part 1
Posted on Jan 25, 2009 under puzzle |
Long considered lost footage, I’ve had this interview from 1977 for many years. Warner Troyer interviews Patrick McGoohan about the making and meaning of the TV series “The Prisoner” in front of a live studio audience.

Patrick is getting …
Patrick is getting carried away. I was 20 when the series started in 1967 in Britain, just as I arrived at college. A lot of us watched it, but I don’t remember anything like a cult. Between The Prisoner and The Avengers, it was a toss-up which you preferred. And the claim that he went into hiding after the last episode strikes me now as is pure moonshine. Nobody took TV dramas that seriously. Sorry, It’s all back-projection from when it did become a cult - i.e. when it reached the US.

(this is ) a place that is trying to destroy the individual by every means possible. so he accepts he is number. This is more so after 911. and what is more, 911 was done by “U.S”. not them. no one understands my name. or the lack of “i” in it. gotta run. be seeing you.

Wow. What a gem this interview is. He seems a bit abrasive at first, but he is true & honest and his integrity, whether you agree with him or not, was most honorable. Thank you for finding & posting this. Brilliant.

It’s not unusual …
It’s not unusual for writer’s to use nom-de -plume or pseudonyms for their work. With authors it’s well known which ones have done that. Thanks to Patrick for telling us which one’s he used but would like to know some of the other TV/Film credits he used. This was a man of many facets. This interview is one of the best of any I have seen = 5*

It would be worth finding out which scripts he worked on. He reminded me of Orson Welles, a brilliant actor yet also a brilliant writer. A rare thing..

RIP Patrick! The …
RIP Patrick! The Prisoner was one of a kind. The interview here, at least, the intro is amusing, because no one–McGoohan, the interviewer, or the audience seems happy to be there. But I love that this stuff is available on YouTube and I am going to have my Prisoner memorial marathon using the Scott Apel episode order.
