Jigsaw Puzzle Blues - Fleetwood Mac w/ Danny Kirwan (’68)
Posted on Mar 20, 2009 under puzzle |
Some people might not realise that Fleetwood Mac was a blues band which morphed into a progressive blues rock band before they hit the big time with Stevie Nicks et al. The original band had great guitarists: not only Peter Green, but also Jeremy Spencer and Danny Kirwan. Danny Kirwan went on to have a significant role in the early evolving Fleetwood Mac: singing, playing guitar, composing and arranging. This is one of his early efforts off the ‘English Rose’ album. It was also the ‘B’ side …

Last I heard, he …
Last I heard, he was living with relatives, not homeless. I hope that’s true! He is such a great talent. I hate to think of him on the street.

I’ll be glad to put him up if he wants to come to the US. He’s a great talent who has written some of my favorite songs.

Most likely top …
Most likely top billing was purely based on who had a hit in the charts at the time, and pressure from management. Marmalade had supported Pind Floyd at The Marquis Club but by this time had more commercial hit records. (including Reflections of My Mind) Their manager also managed the Tremeloes (formerly Brian Poole and the Tremeloes) so my guess is some arm twisting went on to get them top-billing as well.
The singer from Marmalade later did most of the lead vocal for Alan Parson’s Project.

Hahaha! Look at …
Hahaha! Look at the order of the billing that the concert poster shows! Pink Floyd is nothing but a small supporting act! Anyways love this album, the U.S. album “English Rose” which has one of the best front covers EVER! (seriously, Mick Fleetwood in drag!)

Danny also wrote the tune, but there is a jazz era vibe about it.

For years I thought this was Pete Green - Danny if you’ve got any brain cells left, come back! Btw great tune, hats of (and my wishes that they saw some royalties) to the old jazz guys who originally recorded it about thirty or fourty years earlier.

Jan 1969 @ Fillmore West:
the Mac returns to the stage for their 2nd set, drunk as skunks! After a couple of minutes of horseplay; crotch grabbing each other and simulated sodomy, PGreen walks back to the drum kit and pushes Mick away and takes over. Mick comes out front and goes into a y striptease, while the band plays JIGSAW. He finally stopped when he had discarded all but a pair of tiny skivvies.

hear hear — always wished it were longer and also that film exists of Danny playing it — the hope is that Danny one day reappears. He’s channeling Django and Charlie Christian but it’s all new and soooo perfect…

How many fresh faced 18/19 year old kids could come up with anything like this these days? I suspect, not many. It’s nice to know Danny is still recognized as the talent he was.

I thought the guy with that wonderful vibrato was Peter Green, and now thanks to you I’m discovering a new guitar player.
If you can recommend me anything (song versions or albums) from Danny Kirwan, I’d thank you

Actually the Goltop …
Actually the Goltop had P90s pickups. And it`s a really different sound from the humbuckers. The Black Beauty definitely had “PAFs” since back in those times they didn`t have aftermarket pickups.

yes! most definately: I suspect those pick ups are PAF’s as well…but possibly not, as the Gold Top had a thinner humbucking, compared to the Standard. Wonderful. sad, tragic stroies of him and greenie..so much talent, wasted…

John Cipollina from QUicksilver Messenger Service was really big with vibrato, although he used the Whammy Bar because his “hand-Vibrato” was weak (as he explained to Jerry Garcia)
