What are some games to stimulate the brain for better memory etc?
Posted on May 29, 2009 under games |I've heard suggestions like sudoku, however I've never played that. What are other games I can play besides crosswords? I need something that will be in front of me, like a book of games.
Instead of focusing on exercises i would consider working on different strategies for memory.
Consider changing the rules a little bit. For example. Lets say you're trying to remember a series of numbers as follows
1 7 5 2 5 9 8 3 9
The average short term memory can hold 5 things plus or minus 2
To remember each number individually would be nearly impossible short term, but now lets change the rules, instead of remembering them 1 by 1 try remember this
175 259 839
or
17 52 59 83 9
If you're looking for long term memory strategies try using a adverb or a word that is very descriptive to help you remember, for example, let's say i need to remember to get groceries after work. I would think something to myself like "if i don't remember to pick up the groceries my wife will come flying at me like a wailing spider monkey on a cupcake."
sounds weird i know but if it helps you remember, it works!
You could also try and find meaning for what you're trying to remember. If you can relate what you're trying to remember to something that is relevent to you it will be much easier to retain
Hope this helps, best of luck!

It's worth learning Sudoku. It's easy to learn, difficult to master, and meets your criteria perfectly.

You really should invest in a nitendo ds console!!! They are handheld and have many training games like 'dr kawashima: how old is your brain' 'dr kawashima: more brain training' you can even learn new languages and there are loads of puzzle games too.
